Breckenridge History

Step Back In Time

In the summer of 1859, gold is discovered along the Blue River and a base camp, later to be known as Breckenridge, is established. While none of this base camp remains today, Breckenridge does contain more than 350 historic structures, making it the largest historic district in the state of Colorado.

Discover some of the history of Breckenridge for yourself through various historical sites and museums offered by the Summit Historical Society. Some of the sites below are free and others have a nominal charge. Call the Summit Historical Society for times, location and prices at 970-453-9022.

Main Street Museum - Located at 115 S. Main Street, this free museum recalls the history of skiing and snowboarding in displays, posters and photos. Learn about the 10th Mountain Division with a room depicting the lifestyle of the Division members.

Summit Historical Tours - Stroll through historic Breckenridge, which is listed in the National Historic Register and boasts 245 buildings from earlier days. Guided walking tours and self-guided brochures are available.

Alice G. Milne Memorial Park - 102 North Harris Street-This Public Park contains two small houses in a Victorian lawn setting. The Milne House is a clapboard sided home that was built in the early 1880s. The smaller Eberline House was built in the 1870s and is one of Breckenridge’s oldest homes. Both homes are associated with early Breckenridge families. Some restoration has been completed however additional work is necessary to fully restore the grounds and the structures. (970) 453-9022

Barney Ford House Museum - 111 East Washington Avenue-Visit this 1882 Victorian home in downtown Breckenridge that is being restored as a tribute to Barney L. Ford. Barney was the son of a Virginia slave who escaped via the Underground Railroad and achieved success in Breckenridge and throughout the west as a prominent businessman, civic leader, black rights advocate, and mine owner.

Briggle House - 104 North Harris Street-The 1890s Victorian residence was home to a prominent Breckenridge family. The home has been restored to its period condition and contains furnishings and artifacts that depict early Breckenridge life. The home is adjacent to the Alice G. Milne Park, which contains an example of a 1880s and a 1870s home.

Country Boy Mine French Gulch Road - The County Boy Mine was established in 1887 and is one of the largest and most famous gold mines in Breckenridge. Today you can visit and venture into a real mine at this historic and restored mining site.

Edwin Carter 1875 Museum - 111North Ridge Street. Tour Edwin Carter’s 1875 museum. Known as the “log cabin naturalist” Edwin Carter came to Breckenridge as a miner during the gold rush. He quickly recognized the impact of mining on the local wildlife and dedicated his life to preservation. The museum was his home and workshop, and contains specimens from his collection, which became one of the foundations for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

Iowa Hill Hydraulic Mine - Airport Road (approximately .9 miles off of Park Avenue). Park at the trailhead and follow the interpretive signs that guide visitors on a moderate one-mile loop through the park. The signs will be installed this summer and will describe the hydraulic process that was used by miners to extract rich gold from the gulches. The park contains many remnants of the operation as well as a miner’s boardinghouse.

Lomax Placer Gulch - 301 Ski Hill Road. Tour one of the area’s early placer mine sites and learn about the different mining techniques used by prospectors. The site contains several historic structures including a miners cabin and an assay office with many examples of mining tools, processes, and artifacts.

Rotary Snowplow Park - Boreas Pass Rd at French Street. Visit this Park, which commemorates the activity and role of the railroad that served early Breckenridge. The Park contains a Rotary Snowplow, boxcars, and a restored interpretive cabin filled with railroad photos and artifacts. A cosmetically restored steam engine similar to the ones that ran over Boreas Pass and through Town at the turn of the century will be added to the Park early this summer. The Park also contains picnic tables and a short nature hike

Washington Mine - Illinois Gulch Road-Visit the 1880’s gold and silver mine to tour the underground mine and see the actual tools and machinery used by prospectors..
